A sublease happens when a current tenant (usually a UCR student) temporarily rents their room or unit to someone else while they're away — most commonly over the summer.

Subleases can be as short as a month or as long as a full semester. They're common for students going home for summer, doing an internship elsewhere, or studying abroad.

Always verify the original lease allows subleasing
Not all landlords allow subleasing. Before agreeing to any sublease, confirm that the original lease explicitly permits it. Ask to see the lease clause.
